Somewhere In Time

October 28, 2006

… is a movie they filmed at The Grand Hotel. I haven’t seen it, because it looks boring. But this weekend, everything is hilarious. Hundreds of fully-grown, mortgage-paying adults are dressed up like they’re 100 years old and walking around with powdered noses. The men, especially. Someone tapped me from behind with a cane, and it was creepy.

Scream in the Parlor

October 22, 2006

I totally screamed in the parlor, but I couldn’t believe that this woman was flashing me. There was a a group of eight women posed, and I was getting ready to take their picture. They looked around to make sure no one was coming, then one of them said, “Take the picture!” as she flashed me. So… I took the picture, screamed, and turned red.

Next Move

October 19, 2006

I love to plan things. Long-term things, mostly. I leave the short-term things up in the air. But the long-term things that I keep in the back of my mind are like little anchors and markers of progress. This time, my long-term plans are longer than usual. But they’re still there.

So, I’ll be done with my work here on Halloween. Then… short-term adventuring.

Honor, the hometown, to pass out Halloween candy on a big porch with family.

Grand Rapids, to have good times with my lovely grandparents.

Lansing, a comfortable home-like place to sleep on couches and sew things back together, like bottoms of jeans and new curtains for friends. Listen to friends play music again, which I’ve been missing for quite a while now. Not much of that going on here! I’ve kept up the clarinetting much more here, though. The hootnanny flute-o-phone thing.

Minneapolis, with Melissa, to check the place out. Maybe I’ll live there come January. I’m not afraid of snow. Maybe I’ll find a mountain nearby to board down on weekends.

Cary, North Carolina, where the streets are clean and the opportunities are endless. That’s the way Barbara, my 78 year-old sweetheart of a suitemate, makes it sound.

Sometime, I’ll fly to Colorado with my grandma to see my Aunt Sue and her family. And for Thanksgiving, friends are gathering in Lansing from California. Can’t wait for these things.

These are short-term, happy things to look forward to. They are also real life, and real opportunities. Along the way, maybe I will find a place too lovely to leave. That will be fine, too, like a long-term plan. Find a place that is just awesome, and have a career and all of that. These places I’m visiting are also places of potential work. I’m not just loafing and floating around.

Most importantly, I want to keep learning French, how to do calligraphy, & play in an orchestra.

Phew. That’s… about it!

Crazy

October 12, 2006

Taken this morning! Bunches of employees had me taking their pictures outside this morning, so they took one of me afterwards. I look really tired, because I am, and I’m going home!

Uncle John and Cousin Foo Visit

October 12, 2006

I had visitors last Thursday & Friday. They stayed downtown, with a great room on the water, thanks to my buddy Matt working there. We talked about tourists and ate fish sandwiches, then I showed them the hotel and we walked around for a while. So awesome!

Funny one of Patrick the chef on his last day, jumping around making noises and stuff.

Some pictures from a lovely car ride. Wheels underneath, trees whooshing by and bright skies make a long trip just fine.

Morning

October 5, 2006

Now, I think I’ll look back to the gang up here as a pretty memorable bunch. I’ll think of them all together, even though they’ve left and they’re still leaving in pieces. The world feels a little smaller, though, now that I have friends overseas and in new, big cities.

A grandma almost cried this morning because she liked her pictures so much. Not that I had much to do with it, she likes her grandkids, but it was great to be part of it anyways.

The sunrise was nuts this morning, hot neon like the crayon colors.

Uncle Jon and cousin Jennifer are visiting today, just a short, unexpected hop to the island. Cool!

In America

October 4, 2006

I watched In America last night, and it rained and thundered outside.  It was pretty nice.
